Jerome Boateng joined the Blues in July 2010, following in the footsteps of Vincent Kompany and Nigel de Jong by making the move from Hamburger SV to Manchester City.

He was born in the German capital and initially plied his trade as a versatile defender with Hertha Berlin, breaking into their first team around his 18th birthday.

After catching the eye at Hertha, Jerome’s growing reputation as one of Germany’s most promising young players saw Hamburger SV capture his services in the summer of 2007.

During his time in Hamburg he also became a regular in Germany’s Under 21 side, helping them to victory in the 2009 European Championships sealed with an emphatic win over England in the final.

His first senior cap came against Russia in October 2009, but he marked it by being sent off in the second half. That did not put the national selectors off, and Jerome was named in the German 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup.

Football runs in the family, with an uncle having played for Ghana and brother Kevin-Prince an established presence in the Premier League, first with Spurs before moving to Portsmouth.
