On Wednesday, City suffered the disappointment of losing to rivals Manchester United in the semi-final of the Carling Cup but, if Tottenham lose at Birmingham and Liverpool fail to beat Bolton a day earlier, a win over Portsmouth would take them into fourth place. Emmanuel Adebayor could return to attack after compassionate leave.
Portsmouth have taken one point from their last three Premier League games and that came on Tuesday night when Danny Webber scored the 50th goal of his career to earn his side a 1-1 draw against fellow strugglers West Ham. Papa Bouba Diop and Michael Brown missed that game and both are doubtful against City.
